*** David Fellows Wins Hartside Hill Climb ***
*** Massive Solihull turnout at CX Season Opener ***

Sunday saw a bright and sunny start to the 2019 Cross season. Solihull brought along an incredible 36 riders to the first round of the West Midlands Cyclocross League at Shrewsbury Sports Centre.
First up were the U8s & U10s. Rose Neeley Battled hard to gain a credible 4th place in her category. James Caine finished 9th in the boys race which also featured Seb Rogers & Will Garner who rode brilliantly displaying the skills they have been learning in training on the challenging course.
Five riders raced hard in the U12 with Holly Saunders putting in a fantastic performance after being held up by an incident on the first corner leaving her dead last she passed virtually all her rivals to finish in an amazing 2nd place. In the U12 race also Representing Solihull was Sam Thomas, Daniel Charlton & Matthew Hitchmough.
The youth race saw 10 of our riders taking on the full course with top ten performances by William Ryan 6th U16, Max Saunders 6th U14 and Ella Tandy gracing the podium again as 3rd U14 female.
In the women’s race Ailsa Neely made her CX debut with a hard earned 4th place in her category, not to be outdone Judith Harper gained a 3rd place in her category.
The veterans category saw no fewer than 9 SCC riders on the starting grid. Gary Rowing Parker took the honours with a 3rd place ride in his age group, closely followed by Peter Ward in 4th. But a special mention for Bernard Wareing who despite his saddle flopping back and forth like a see-saw hung on for 6th place.
The Senior race saw Conor and Jacob Jones stepping up to the Junior category in the 50 minute race for the first time and had a ding dong battle with each other all race with Conor eventually pipping Jacob to the line by 2 seconds and them both finishing 6th and 7th respectively. Mike Brownsword was a creditable 13th and Robert Neely 19th on his CX debut!

Steve Mountford & Edward Priddy made a quick trip over the border to South Wales to ride the notoriously fast R25/3H 25mile TT course near Rhigos. Eddy finished in a time of 53.43 & Steve Clocked a 59.31.

It was up to Chesire for 3 of our Veteran riders who were racing in the TLI national Championships on Sunday. In the D Cat race was Paul Mann & David Smith & Ian Cowan was in the E Cat. Even though the weather was a little chilly there was still clear blue skies. The D cat race stayed together for the majority of the race with a few attacks that there reeled in rather quick. Paul arguably made the best move of the race on the penultimate lap & had a large gap for around 5 miles with one other but they were caught & with 1km to go David & Paul had poor positioning on the road & found themselves unable to contest the sprint & finished mid pack.
Ian's race was much of the same for the majority – lots of attacks but nothing major. But on the last lap one sprung off the front & rode away solo to the win. Ian did his fair share on the front to try & reel him in but it was too late. Coming into the last corner Ian was still on the front when the whole pack seemingly came round him & as it would've been too risky to try & sprint for 2nd Ian sat up & finished in the pack.

Finially Hill Climbing Featured Heavily this week. On Thursday evening Kit Buchanan raced the Stratford CC Hill Climb up Saintbury hill. Kit finshed 4th in 7.04 in a larger than normal field for a midweek club hill climb which was won by Cameron Biddle. Saturday Morning & it was off to the south Cotswolds for Richard Burt who raced in the Dursley Road Club Hill Climb. Richard finished in a time of 7.18 which placed him 1st in his age cat once again. David Fellows made the long journey to the North Pennines on Sunday morning to race the Border City wheelers HC up Hartside Pass, just east of Penrith. The climb was a long one at 4.5 miles & an average gradient of 5% But rarely did it tip over the average. David manage to take the Win in 17.43 just 10 seconds ahead of 2nd place who just happened to be the course record holder on this particular climb. David continued his winning form on Tuesday evening winning the Worcester StJohns CC Club Hill Climb up Ankerdine hill -900m long at 12% average. David won in a time of 2.52 the fastest time up there for 25 years!

Another great week of racing – Next Week, we should have the results of the 2nd round of CX league & the final round of the LVRC Percy Stallard series!
